The constant attacks on Hillary by the NYT was the reason I gave up my subscription, and that subscription was 30 years old. Sadly I fear the press has learned nothing from the last 4 years. Just yesterday Dana Bash of CNN commented on trump’s change of tone. I didn’t know whether to laugh or cry so I just changed the channel

I and millions of other voters, especially women, were heartbroken and furious about the treatment of Hillary Clinton by the right and by the media which helped Trump win. We still are but I have never seen anyone in the media express sympathy about us voters. The media seems to think that only the people who go to political rallies in huge numbers and yell loudly are “real Americans” and that their votes count more than those who are not so vocal or visible.

The thing that is driving me crazy these past two days is how the media has ignored the victories of Ossof and Warnock which is a huge story. The American people have turned their backs on Republicans and have handed control of our government to Democrats yet the media can’t be bothered to give that story more than a passing mention. This election is a strong indication that the American people are waking up and saying no to the extremism and the insanity and it’s not just black voters. White suburban voters are also turning away from Republicans. That story should merit a lot more attention than it is getting. Just the fact that Mitch is out ought to be worth a few minutes but the media seems to hate reporting on positive things about Democrats.

Right?! After everything Trump’s done, I was floored when she started that “tone” garbage, as if that is even relevant. They’re like Stockholm victims.

The NYT definitely screwed Hillary, in multiple ways. I understand the "empathy for the brainwashed" to a small degree, but some of them are allegedly intelligent people. I know members of my own family--college educated, well-read—whom I've stopped talking to because they have made us (democrats, liberals and those who fight for a free press) the enemy. No matter what fact you offer to dispute their claims, they yell "Fake news!" But the worst part is that they still claim some banner of "family values" and "patriotism" while being bullies and now, insurrectionists.

Yeah the empathy thing I understand like 20% of. But the idea people should be absolved for becoming domestic terrorists is not ok

Expand full comment

Agreed. Now, how do we combat the falsehood that "democrats 'allowed' our cities to burn down'" over the summer? I'm exhausted trying to research and prove they are wrong.

Don’t bother wasting your time, you won’t convince people who will tell you that Wednesday was justified but BLM and Antifa “don’t stand for anything but destruction and mayhem”

I feel the same. I finally was worn out trying to fact check and prove to those "others", that is was Proud Boys, and similar that were setting fires, destroying anything in their way. There were very few news organizations (print), that wrote the truth, if they even bothered to investigate for the truth. There are so many examples of how the Fourth Estate has failed us. I blame the Corporate Owners for that. You cannot run a true news organization being afraid of the likes of Trump. The truth is the truth. Not some variation of the truth, plus or minus, facts. It is this simple. Quit being afraid of deranged, money hungry politicians. Being honest will pay of in the end. Yes, it may take time, but the truth is what built news agencies.

Because so many on the right are claiming this is no worse than the BLM protests, I did ANOTHER search yesterday for what facts were out there. There are multiple sources, but the most vital piece of research I found, I believe in the Washington Post, points out that in very few incidents was it proven that BLM protesters caused damage. It also pointed out that when there is talk about the "violence" during protests, much of that was initiated by police.

I have no empathy for the so called brainwashed their problem with believing what trump and his enablers stand for is hate and greed. If your relatives are the 1% then we understand it. But if they are hard working people then it's just HATE and you can't explain that.

The media's hatred of Hillary Clinton was the kindling that ultimately led to the out of control blaze we saw on Wednesday. A fire that includes complicent law enforcement taking selfies and opening the gate to aid and usher in domestic terrorists. That misled mob, due in large part by the press, led to the death of five people, now including one police officer. Any critically thinking person can review the many predictions and warnings that Hillary made during the campaign. They will discover that she was spot on. The one remark that the press continued to hammer that helped to sink her was the "deplorable" comment. How can you watch the video of January 6th and not see just how right she was.

Veteran, Patriot, just wanted to voice her opinion, interviewing the grandfather on GMA to hear him tell how she was just someone that loved her country. That’s how the media is portraying the woman that died when shot during the insurrection. Not how she was trying to break through the window of a barricaded door to a secure location in the Capital building. Not how she was for years posting hateful comments on social media. Nope, they are making her a Martyr, because apparently they still have not learned anything about covering Trump and the disease he spreads.

I was in the US Army, Combat Engineer, and I don’t recall making an oath to try and take over the Capitol building. I don’t remember signing my name on the dotted line to prevent the transition of power in an election. She has my sympathy for dying, but maybe the media could cool it on honoring people like her and what she did.

She has no sympathy from me. After all, if she'd just obeyed the police, she'd have been fine, right?

Expand full comment

BS. I have no pity for her, nor her family. She was ex military that was taught how to fight these situations in other countries. How the hell did she ever consider this as the right thing to do. How does her family find an excuse. Now, if they want to go down the road of "mentally ill, disabled" that might gain "some" sympathy. Otherwise. Nada from me and my family. She knew better. Falling under the spell of another, is not the "normal" for citizens. Yes, it happens but it is not normal.

The press are cowards. Chuck Todd, Dana Bush, Andrea Mitchell just to name a few can miss me! What they did to Hillary still chaps my hide. And to hear them now saying this is terrible and it's the Trump supporters & Trump who caused this. It's like where the f*ck were you when Hillary was telling you everything you needed to know about this jerk off?!! You condemned her.

They are all feckless. It's disgusting. Thanks again Eric for continuing on this path of calling it as it is. I just hope that they grow a set and tell the truth and stop being so scared of offending folks that certainly would stab you in the back first chance they got. Okay I need to calm down. Have a great weekend.

Great post. I think this was your best one yet.

It’s encouraging the media is at least trying to get the language right this time. Maybe now they’ll finally understand that words matter. Just by using “coup” and “domestic terrorists” and “it’s not Antifa (whoever the fuck they are) it was Trump supporters” it has kept the narrative and the public perception over this crisis moving in the right direction. And, as a side note, I think it will result in Trump resigning today to avoid another impeachment.

Absolutely perfect song choice today. It put a huge smile on my face to start the day with and now all I can think of are the blue skies of California.

Antifa is a movement not an organization. It stands for anti-fascist. So first, why would an anti fascist group be supporting Trump who is a fascist while they carried Trump and Confederate flags into the Capital. Secondly, the group of delusional Trump followers marched from the Ellipse to the Capital on TV. Can someone show me the video where Trump's people turned left on 14th ST NW and "Antifa" slipped in from 12th ST NW? Antifa is a Fox News wild card they throw down every time the deplorables behave badly. It's actually hilarious.

I am. They took extraordinary steps to protect the Lincoln Monument from the George Floyd protesters back in June. Remember this? https://www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/style/the-dystopian-lincoln-memorial-photo-raises-a-grim-question-will-they-protect-us-or-will-they-shoot-us/2020/06/03/7a1c52b4-a5b7-11ea-bb20-ebf0921f3bbd_story.html If they're going to go to that extreme to protect the unoccupied Lincoln Monument, I expect them to take AT LEAST the same steps to protect the Capitol, particularly with Congress in session and when the intent of the announced demonstration is to interfere with Congressional action and the orderly transfer of power. Had they taken the demonstration seriously, it's possible there would have been no deaths and it's probable the Capitol wouldn't have been invaded by the orange blob's flying monkeys. CBS,NBC,ABC all have just skated over the surface of the obvious gaping fracture to the fabric of this society! CNN tries to dig into substance but actually stops short of the ugly picture! FOX, just propaganda and brainwashing

For those unable to think clearly or logically about their manipulation. The fantasy of America being above and ugly turmoil of racism, tribalism, Hate and corruption is over! The world sees clearly the real Ugly America!

I’m not certain that the institutional GOP embraced democracy in my lifetime. I think the difference now is that they are saying out loud and in public the things that previously were only inner monologues.

To paraphrase Reagan, Republicanism is not the answer, it is the problem.

What these clowns say matters. Their bullshit should be countered by louder truth at every opportunity and they need to be individually, publicly shamed.

I wish they could all join up FSTV. I remember when Olbermann was booted, they put Cenq U. in his place. He ended up leaving because he refused their orders to curb what he covered or how he covered it. I believe, Rachel and Lawrence have refused to be corralled by those in charge. Their ratings give them that power to tell it as it is.. I can't say much for the other network people. As long as CNN has "Wolf" as part of their line up, I refuse to watch.

So the WSJ editorial board wishes trump would just "go away quietly". Five years of seeing, listening to and reading about the bloviatings of a cowardly liar, punctuated by his nauseating commission of outright sedition an hour before his coolaid drinkers storm the Capitol, and he should just be allowed to slink away? What kind of message does that send to the millions of screaming conspiracy theorists who are right now, and will certainly will continue to celebrate their "show of strength and patriotism" as they see it? The press has a job to do.
