Take the scenarios over these past three and a half years and superimpose them over Bill and Hillary or Barack and Michelle. What's the over under regarding the major media outlets in this country calling for resigning within the first six months? Yet the Trumps keep marching on and make no mistake, the press's coddling will continue if Trump manages to pull off the coup of reelection. It's amazing how Trump can sight preserving our history when it comes to the Confederacy but the press was mostly silent as Melenia cut down Jackie's trees. The history of the beloved First Lady of an assassinated president is removed and that's okay with the them. Well the glowing articles of the Rose Garden will be good examples to future journalists if Trump wins again. These will be the types of stories they will be reporting on if they want to stay out of jail or worse. I look forward to their articles on next year's grain harvest.

I fear you’re right abt the type of journalism we’d see in second Trump term

Imagine what would happen if any potential First Lady had done nude soft porn magazine shoots the way that Melania did. Those photos are not a rumor or a hoax and are readily available on the internet. Those pictures were published in the Gentleman’s Quarterly and even more racy ones in the now-defunct French men’s magazine Max. You can bet that once those images were reported in some fringe outlet the mainstream media would cover them, using the excuse that it had already been reported.

Right, I forgot about that! There's just too much to remember with this administration.

she is so fake like that thing she calls her husband. them in the WH created a lot of firsts. but firsts we darn well do not need. and yes the media is bought by the rich. vote Blue and get them out. do not rely on the polls. help others get out and vote also. it's life and death

gosh this is a good point abd one I didn’t have time to address in my piece—press hammered Hillary as First Lady bc she was “cold” and didn’t “connect” w/ Americans....and Melania does???

The Russian Military uniform was a subtle touch; all that was missing were the epaulettes, chest ribbons & ridiculously large brimmed hat

My first thought -- since 45 seems a bit obsessed with Cuba -- is that she'd borrowed the frock from Fidel's closet.

Melania's speech was filled with lies - they all were - but at least it doesn't appear to have been plagarized this time.

Charles Pierce strongly agrees with you , especially about the coverage by Politico and its blithe assertion that voters wouldn’t care about violations of the Hatch Act. How could they know if they don’t bother telling us that they are breaking the law?

The perfidy and treachery of many in mainstream media could be our undoing. We can't cede our power to them out of fear of what we know they are doing but I'm not sure how we battle it, short of just not watching or reading them. I suspect blackmail and payoffs may be in play here with some of them.

I'll be fairer than the media and note that when The Times did that story in 2017, no one knew that she was actually getting more money out of him. But that is a reminder that The Times and other media have treated the last two Democratic first ladies far differently than they have treated the last two republicans, and I have read occasional references to Laura Bush saying something to her husband about his policies. I have no doubt the Bushes were and are a loving couple, but the idea that the political and personal worlds were entirely separate taxes credulity. In a way, I think some who have been around long enough are still trying to make up for what too many see as the "mistreatment" of Nancy Reagan.

She sleeps in a separate bedroom in a whole separate HOUSE in Maryland--with her kid and her parents. The DC journalists I know say they don't think it's the public's business. But her helicopter flights to and from DC (I live in the flyway in Bethesda) and how much they cost are certainly the public's business!

The coverage was abominable. The speech begged the question the DC puppets ignored: Who cares given that not a word reflected the reality of her husband’s America?

As an aside, the refusal to move down to DC may have been legitimate in part. At the time, Barron was enrolled in a special ed program. Moving him suddenly in mid-semester to a new school maybe was not a good idea. And for the record, normally I’d avoid putting him but till his father shows a scintilla of decency, for me he’s fair game. Sorry. Feel free to be offended but no need to tell me you are. A son of a POTUS who’s killed tens of thousands of Americans doesn’t deserve more courtesy than his father extends. Others are suffering far more than little Barron because I ever so slightly invade his privacy.

Who was Melania really working for in 1990s when she snatched Donald Trump? I think she's a very successful agent working for Putin. a Red Sparrow who got her nude photo "grabbing herself by the p---" published before meeting Donald at a party in 1998. Then she snatched him, married him, and stuck him in front of a TV set with Fox News on. (read more)

Far too many Americans (and this includes a generous portion of the media) love the idea of royalty and would gladly welcome it to the US. The excessive fawning over First Ladies (not only Melanie) is part of that.

Mr. Boehlert, didn’t see anything outrageously stupid from Trump last night. Tell me where to send the $25. Again tonight?

There is one simple answer why the Trump marriage is not questioned as vigorously as the Clinton. The Clinton coverage was contemporary with the discovery of his infidelity. Mrs. Clinton had choices to make. Trump’s (known) infidelity was a dozen years ago. Mrs. Trump made her choice years ago. There’s no “news” to be had there.

Equally there was little coverage of the Clinton marriage in 2010. A dozen years on.
