Hillary Clinton reads Press Run and encourages others to do the same. I think I will take her advice.

That's really awesome!

Isn’t it? Was quite exciting

Journalists work to squeeze bias out of their pursuit. Propagandists do the reverse. The only thing they share is that they work with words. Fox lost me at "you decide."

Hillary's got it right IMHO.

My immediate take on that slogan was "We report what you should decide."

I pray for justice.

P.S. I'm not one bit surprised that Hillary subscribes to Press Run. I hope her endorsement helps others see what a national treasure you are.

I am confident that everyone who reads Press Run will be thrilled by Hillary's endorsement, but I hope that thrill does not overshadow Eric's very important analysis of Fox News. It is a serious piece from a serious writer, and the message should be the beginning a national discussion of the role the press should play in society.

Thanks Rick, I appreciate it. And I hope Biden WH thinks long and hard abt Fox News

Congrats on the very high profile testimonial from Sec'y Clinton, Eric! You deserve that.

If anyone Hillary understands the damage the media does to Democrats, even the mainstream media. People keep saying that Democrats should fight back more but far too often when they do the mainstream media slam them. They come down harder on Democrats then they do Republicans when they try to play hardball.

I do hope that the Biden admin will kick Fox "News" to the curb. They are worthless and contributed greatly in the spread of misinformation on multiple subjects, most importantly about Covid and it's seriousness. Quite a hefty endorsement there Eric! Let's get it!! Appreciate you.

For me, spending 2020 lying abt a pandemic is the line Fox crossed

Expand full comment

Worthless? I disagree. From reports and analyses I've seen, they have promoted enough disinformation to have caused serious damage, including contributing to the rising death toll from COVID-19. Being worthless would be a step up.

I see what you are saying and I can go with that. hehehe

I, for one, am enjoying the fighting between Fox, OANN and Newsmax. Let them eat each others' faces off. I'm confident the Biden WH will not give credentials to the last two, same with Gateway Pundit (seriously how bad do you have to be to give that outlet any space?)

Put Fox News in the back with the magazines that sometimes don't even show up and never ever call on them. Hey, we let them stay. We're just not giving them any attention.

Can they throw Haberman back there, as well?

the right-wing civil war is quite unique and def worth watching...Fox has never really faced a movement from the right-right flank

Who ever emerges from that fight is Gilead.

I have never heard of The War and Treaty before and i've just spent and hour listening to their fantastic harmony and unique sound. Thanks for sharing this amazing song. I also like your articles!

aren't they great? and thanks so much

I've now watched a handful of their videos and will be buying some of their music. They're very talented. Thanks for turning me on to them!

Couldn’t agree more. They use the news arm to provide a veneer of legitimacy to their propaganda operation. The veneer has worn through.

Expand full comment

Right? It wore through long time ago. It’s just that lots of Beltway insiders don’t want to admit reality

Completely agree. In fact we are in the midst of a cold civil war. The Union didn't defeat the Confederacy by assuming their point of view on slavery was valid. Why do that today in our divided civil battle for truth? The Democrats have to start playing hardball and that can start by Biden letting everyone know where his administration stands on an alleged news organization that for decades has contributed to the divide in this country. Go one step further. There should be litigation thrown at FOX for their role in causing the death of thousands of Americans who drank their grape Kool-Aid that the virus with either a hoax or it wasn't any worse than a cold. Funny how I can't recall 250k people dying of a cold.

What the did was reckless endangerment but given our free speech protections that would be hard to prove.

Expand full comment

True but I still can't yell fire in a theater.

Yes but the media has special constitutional protection which would make it even harder to win a case against them. And you can bet that the rest of of the media would strongly object as they did when Obama tried to exclude Fox News. I really would like to know if it would be possible to bring a case against Fox for their lies about COVID.

The right wing world has definitely succeeded in using the courts to intimidate the media. The Food Lion — make that Food Lyin’ case against ABC really intimidated them and has made them shy away from that kind of investigative reporting. Ditto for the tobacco industry lawsuit against CBS. Even if a news organization doesn’t lose, they have to spent ridiculous amounts defending themselves. The threat of those kinds of lawsuits is why shows like 20/20 no longer do any serious investigative reports. 60 Minutes is also a pale imitation of its former self.

This: Looking forward, Veitor counsels the Biden White House to, “call Fox what it is: an extension of the Republican Party. Say it often.” Talking points work...use them. And the shout-out to you from Hillary Clinton made my day...I hope you loved it as much as I did.

How do I feel about this? Let us ask for a description from Meg Ryan. Ms. Ryan?

Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes! Yes! Yes!! Yes!! YES! YES!! YES!!! YES!I! YES!!! YES!!! YES!!! YES!!! YES!!! YES!!! Yes!

Now to the bigger part of the story. Not that Fux Noise cannot or should not cover the White House--it should, but not as a journalistic organization, because it isn't--but Fux Noise drives the narrative. Even Jake Tapper, who should know better, stood up for them. And I am reminded of a story at my local paper where a reporter didn't want to do a particular story because the other reporters thought the story was silly. It was a great story. It got him on the front page every day. And he didn't want to do it. And he's now at another outlet doing very well in a certain eastern city.

I don’t know enough about how journalists are credentialed (I assume that there is not anything like the American Bar Association), but maybe if an organization like Columbia Journalism Review were involved in making these decisions, it wouldn’t be seen as being (as) political?

At any rate, I totally agree that tabloid news and propaganda like FNC should not be part of the mix; it degenerates the legitimacy of the actual press.

Did anyone watch "The Little Mermaid" a million times when their children were little? I did. The image at the end of the film, the intersection of good and evil, where Ursula grows into an evil giant, harnessing all of the energy she can to rule the universe is what I imagine when I think about where we are at in this moment! There were so many insults to Americans with the vile abuse of pressers by this White House. When the choreographed images of a Russian propogandist, OAN, began asking questions as if we were watching a North Korean broadcast, I was beside myself. But, that is one tiny kernel of sand in the millions of outrages that FOX, OAN, NEWSMAX, Sinclair's ownership of local media and others have invaded the psyche of all Americans, but mostly gullible, angry, easily persuaded MAGA's. It's laughable when I talk with a MAGA an their talking points for this WH and against masks are lifted from Hannity, Ingraham, Pirro, and the other totally malignant 'entertainers' from FOX. Add to the viral and toxic spread of FOX propaganda, Megyn Kelly, Lara Logan (what happened to her? Well, I know and I think she is completely untreated for her trauma), Dobbs and now the media using these propagandists at CNN and MSNBC-Jason Lewis, Ja'Ron Smith, Peter Navarro ....ahhhh. The mountain of cleansing that needs to take place in the next 4 years is unimaginable! Meanwhile, the Mitch McConnell and the Republicans continue to bastardize the entirety of government by pushing through unqualified judges and rules that will paralyze the Biden administration....
